All 15 Protein Bars, With Taste Notes and Where Each One Fails

The Figure — Grams of protein per dollar, top of the shelf Measured at retail
Pure Protein 14.3g/$
Quest 9.5g/$
Barebells 8.0g/$
Aloha 5.4g/$
RXBAR 4.3g/$

Multi-pack retail prices. The budget bar wins the math; the taste notes below explain why anyone buys the others.

The top shelf shows the five winners. This is the whole shelf — every bar we bought at retail, with the taste note and the specific failure mode, because every protein bar fails somewhere and the marketing will not tell you where.

The winners, expanded

  1. Barebells Caramel Cashew — tastes like a candy bar; isn’t. Fails: melts in a handbag above 75°F.
  2. Quest Chocolate Chip — best protein per dollar on the shelf. Fails: the first three bites are great; the last two are chalk. Split it.
  3. RXBAR Peanut Butter — shortest label, gentlest on a touchy stomach. Fails: 12g protein is the floor of what counts, and 9g sugar is real sugar.
  4. Pure Protein Chocolate — the budget pick; buy the 12-pack. Fails: tastes like the 1990s. You stop noticing by week two.
  5. Aloha Peanut Butter Cup — the plant-based pick that doesn’t taste it. Fails: 14g protein means it’s a snack, not a meal patch.

The rest of the shelf, fast

ONE Birthday Cake — dessert pretending harder than most; sugar alcohols announce themselves. Kind Protein — great nuts, 12g is thin. Clif Builders — gym-bag classic, 20g, but 21g sugar disqualifies it here. think! Brownie Crunch — fine, forgettable. No Cow — highest plant protein, driest texture on the shelf. Gatorade Protein — a candy bar with a permit. MET-Rx Big 100 — 30g protein, 410 calories; that’s a meal replacement wearing a bar costume. Luna — 8g; not eligible, included for scale. Power Crunch — wafer texture is the best on the shelf, 13g is light. Atkins Meal — the sweetener aftertaste outlasts the bar.

House rule stands: bought at retail, no samples accepted, scored on protein ÷ dollar ÷ sugar. When a formula changes, we re-buy and re-print.
